Ex-NATO chief: Attack on Iran has no basis in international law

Jens Stoltenberg, who served as NATO secretary general for a decade before becoming Norway’s finance minister, has delivered a sharp critique of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, declaring that the offensive has no foundation in international law. In an interview published Saturday with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Stoltenberg was asked about Spain’s decision to oppose the war and block the US military from using Spanish bases for further operations in the Middle East. “The attack on Iran has no basis in international law,” he responded, effectively endorsing Madrid’s stance. He reiterated Norway’s call for all parties to exercise restraint and resume diplomatic dialogue as soon as possible to find a resolution to the conflict. The former NATO chief acknowledged growing strains within the transatlantic alliance but expressed confidence in its enduring unity. Asked whether NATO is experiencing one of its most difficult moments since its founding in 1949, Stoltenberg pointed to Europe’s unprecedented efforts to bolster its own security. “There have always been some differences among the allies. I am certain that we will remain united to protect one another,” he said, while noting that Europe is now making an effort unseen in decades to guarantee its own defense. Stoltenberg also addressed concerns about Norway’s economic position amid rising crude oil prices triggered by the conflict. As a major oil exporter, Norway might appear poised to benefit, but the former NATO chief expressed skepticism. He explained that Norway’s sovereign wealth fund gives the country significant exposure to international financial markets, and stock market declines are currently inflicting greater damage than the oil price increases provide in relief. His remarks come amid escalating regional hostilities since the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28, a campaign that has reportedly killed approximately 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with missile and drone operations targeting Israel and US assets across Arab countries, causing casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. Stoltenberg noted that Norway has clearly condemned Iranian violence against its own people and shares international concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program.
