2026-03-10 - 23:22

Air defense systems in Erbil were activated Wednesday, successfully neutralizing a suicide drone approaching the US Consulate in the northern Iraqi city. Local media reported that the interception generated a powerful explosion near the diplomatic facility, though no casualties or damage to the consulate have been confirmed. Multiple drones targeted across Kurdistan Region Simultaneous defensive operations unfolded in the Soran area, where air defense systems destroyed two additional suicide drones, according to local reports. The coordinated nature of the attacks suggests organized attempts to strike multiple targets within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Since Iran began its retaliatory campaign following US and Israeli strikes, explosions and air defense activity have been reported almost daily in Erbil. Diplomatic facilities increasingly threatened Monday's incident, in which debris from one of three drones shot down over Erbil fell near the United Arab Emirates Consulate, prompted strong condemnation from Abu Dhabi. The UAE Foreign Ministry denounced the targeting of its diplomatic mission, reflecting growing concern among Gulf states about the security of their facilities in the region. According to official figures, the Kurdish Regional Government has faced 210 drone attacks since the escalation began, with 177 of those targeting Erbil alone. Regional conflict continues to expand The ongoing drone campaign against Iraqi Kurdistan forms part of Iran's broader retaliatory strategy following the US-Israeli joint attack on Iran launched Feb. 28. That offensive has killed more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and injured over 10,000 others, according to Iranian authorities. Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting US military assets across the region as well as several Israeli cities, expanding the conflict's geographic scope and threatening the stability of neighboring states.
