Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a telephone conversation Wednesday to address the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and discuss a recent incident involving Iranian fire toward Turkish territory. Diplomatic sources confirmed the high-level exchange as regional tensions continue to mount following joint US-Israeli military operations against Iran. Ankara raises airspace violation with Washington During their discussion, Fidan briefed Rubio on the successful interception of a ballistic munition launched from Iran that had been directed toward Turkish airspace. The projectile, detected after crossing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace, was neutralized by NATO air and missile defense units operating in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish National Defense Ministry confirmed on the social media platform NSosyal that air defenses successfully engaged the threat, with interceptor debris landing in Hatay province's Dortyol district while causing no casualties. Regional conflict widens after US-Israeli strikes The diplomatic engagement occurs against a backdrop of severe military escalation across the region. Since Saturday, coordinated US and Israeli strikes have reportedly killed numerous senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded forcefully, launching drone and missile barrages targeting American-linked facilities in Gulf countries, further destabilizing an already volatile region. Türkiye, with its strategic position and commitment to regional stability, continues to monitor developments closely while maintaining dialogue with all parties to prevent further escalation. Türkiye reaffirms defensive capabilities Following the incident, Turkish officials emphasized that Ankara's determination and capacity to protect national territory remain at the highest level. The Ministry statement warned all parties against actions that could escalate the regional conflict, stating: "We reserve the right to respond to any hostile act directed at our country." Communications Director Burhanettin Duran also confirmed that every step to defend Turkish land and airspace would be taken without hesitation, underscoring Türkiye's readiness to safeguard its sovereignty amid the widening confrontation between Iran and US-led forces.
