Germany's Merz urges Israel to scrap West Bank annexation plans

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Israel on Tuesday to scrap plans to annex parts of the West Bank, warning that such measures would undermine efforts to achieve a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, Merz expressed deep concern over recent developments, including Israel's push to expand control over the West Bank and continued growth of illegal settlements. Two-state solution at risk "I want to make this very clear: The annexation measures being discussed in Jerusalem would further complicate the two-state solution," Merz said. "The German government urgently calls for such steps regarding the so-called E1 territory to be avoided. It would be a grave mistake." The E1 area, located east of Jerusalem, is strategically significant as its development would effectively cut off the northern and southern parts of the West Bank, severely fragmenting any future Palestinian state. Diplomatic mission Merz announced that, at his request, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will travel to Israel to emphasize Berlin's position and advocate policy shifts. "It is crucial that we Europeans convey this message together," he stressed. The diplomatic initiative signals Germany's determination to push back against Israeli territorial expansion even as Berlin maintains its commitment to Israel's security. Regional context The German intervention comes amid escalating regional tensions following the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, now in its 11th day. The West Bank has also seen increased violence, with Israeli forces conducting regular raids and Palestinian officials reporting hundreds killed since the Gaza war began. Merz's statement suggests Berlin views the annexation push as a dangerous additional flashpoint that could further destabilize the region.
