The mission encompasses secure containment, storage and planned destruction of any chemical weapons or remnants discovered, with provisions for on-site elimination when safe storage proves impossible. Additionally, the initiative aims to strengthen Syria's health infrastructure against chemical risks by addressing capacity deficiencies. Türkiye's substantial contributions Ankara has already demonstrated its commitment through active participation in international efforts. Turkish teams have been conducting humanitarian demining operations across various Syrian regions, destroying unexploded ordnance in cooperation with the Syrian government. Türkiye also hosted a critical workshop in Ankara on February 16-17, 2026, bringing together task force members and OPCW experts to assess Syria's operational, technical and institutional gaps, subsequently structuring assistance packages accordingly. Formal launch in New York A ceremony marking the task force's official commencement took place March 18 at the United Nations in New York, with Türkiye's Permanent Representative Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız representing Ankara. Beyond Türkiye and Syria, the task force includes Qatar, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Canada and the OPCW Technical Secretariat, reflecting broad international commitment to eliminating chemical hazards on Syrian territory.
