A top Iranian military commander has asserted Tehran’s “complete control” over the vital Strait of Hormuz, issuing a stark warning as tensions with the United States escalate. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, a commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated that Iran, while not seeking conflict, is fully prepared for war and will not yield “even by a millimeter.” Intelligent Surveillance and Warnings to Neighbors Akbarzadeh, cited by Iran's Fars News Agency, claimed that management of the narrow waterway is now fully intelligent, enabling constant monitoring of all surface, underwater, and air movements. He asserted Iran’s authority to decide which vessels may pass. The commander also issued a clear warning to regional states, saying any neighboring land, airspace, or waters used against Iran would be treated as hostile. "This message has already been conveyed to regional parties," he said. Global Energy Chokepoint at Risk The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime oil and gas corridors, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Approximately one-third of all seaborne crude oil passes through this channel, including the majority of exports from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. A significant portion of Iranian oil exports to China also transit this route. Any disruption would have immediate and severe consequences for global energy markets and economies, including those in Asia and Europe, underscoring the strategic concerns for nations like Türkiye that rely on stable energy flows. Escalating US-Iran Standoff The bellicose statements follow heightened friction between Washington and Tehran. The US administration has stated that all options, including military action, remain under consideration. In response, Iranian officials have promised a “swift and comprehensive” retaliation to any American strike. Akbarzadeh hinted at undisclosed capabilities, stating they “will be revealed at an appropriate time,” while claiming Iran does not want to harm the global economy but would not allow the US to benefit from a war.
