Iraqi PM, US envoy discuss preventing regional escalation, urge dialogue to resolve disputes

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani received US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack in Baghdad Sunday for discussions focused on preventing regional escalation and promoting dialogue to resolve conflicts, Sudani's office announced. The meeting addressed bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, along with broader regional developments including Iraq's efforts to support stability in Syria. Counterterrorism Cooperation and Detainee Transfer The talks followed Friday's announcement by US Central Command that it had completed a 23-day mission transferring more than 5,700 ISIS members from detention facilities in northeastern Syria to Iraqi custody. Both sides exchanged views on preventing escalation and underscored the importance of resorting to dialogue and diplomatic channels to resolve conflicts. Sudani emphasized the need for fundamental solutions to deep-rooted problems and stressed preventing aggression and violations of sovereignty in the region. Regional Context and Economic Cooperation Barrack highlighted Iraq's important role in helping resolve regional challenges, reducing tensions, supporting dialogue, and combating terrorism. The discussions also covered opportunities for economic cooperation and comprehensive development aimed at reinforcing long-term stability. Sunday's meeting comes amid heightened US-Iran tensions over Tehran's nuclear program, with the US increasing its military presence in the Middle East as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and additional fighter jets have arrived and the USS Gerald R. Ford is en route.
