Israel issues urgent evacuation warnings for Beirut suburb, 30 Lebanese towns

The Israeli military issued urgent evacuation orders late Monday for civilians in Beirut's southern suburbs and dozens of towns across southern Lebanon, signaling an intensification of its offensive against Hezbollah. Avichay Adraee, the army's spokesperson for Arabic media, called on residents of the Haret Hreik area in the Lebanese capital to leave immediately ahead of what he described as renewed targeting of the area. Widespread evacuation orders In a post on social media platform X, Adraee also warned residents of 30 towns across southern Lebanon to evacuate northward beyond a designated line shown on an accompanying map. The listed towns include Naqoura, Bint Jbeil, Maroun al-Ras, Aita al-Shaab, Mays al-Jabal and several other communities that have experienced repeated cross-border confrontations over decades of conflict. The army claimed that Hezbollah's activities were forcing it to act "without any intention of harming" civilians, a standard formulation used in such warnings. Campaign expands The evacuation orders mark a significant expansion of Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah, which began Monday with Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir announcing an "offensive campaign" expected to last several days. Earlier Monday, Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and southern Lebanon killed at least 31 people and injured 149, according to Lebanese health officials. Hezbollah has responded with rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel, framing its actions as retaliation for Israeli strikes and in solidarity with Iran following the US-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Humanitarian concerns mount The mass evacuation orders raise urgent humanitarian concerns as hundreds of thousands of civilians face displacement amid ongoing hostilities. Southern Lebanon and Beirut's southern suburbs, both Hezbollah strongholds, are densely populated areas where residents now confront the prospect of extended military operations. With no indication of when they might be able to return, and as the conflict shows no signs of abating, civilian suffering is likely to mount in the coming days.
