Israel solidifies Gaza ‘yellow line’ with permanent military positions

Israeli forces are cementing the so-called “yellow line” inside the Gaza Strip as a permanent military reality, according to a report by Israeli daily Haaretz. The army has established 32 new positions and built a 17-kilometer (10.5-mile) ground barrier along the line, transforming what was initially presented as a temporary arrangement into a fixed separation zone. The consolidation has accelerated in recent months, with the line now serving as the central axis of Israeli military deployment inside the enclave. Expanding control The “yellow line” was originally conceived as a notional boundary under a ceasefire agreement, separating Israeli-controlled areas from zones where Palestinians are permitted to be present. However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared on February 17 that Israel would not retreat “a single millimeter” from the line until Hamas is disarmed. The report noted that more than 200 Palestinians have been killed near the line in recent months, underscoring the deadly toll of the ongoing Israeli military presence. Ceasefire violations mount The consolidation comes amid daily ceasefire violations by Israeli forces since October 10. According to Health Ministry data, those violations have killed 691 Palestinians and wounded 1,876 others as of March 18. The broader war on Gaza, launched in October 2023, has claimed more than 72,000 Palestinian lives, injured approximately 172,000, and devastated an estimated 90 percent of civilian infrastructure. Türkiye’s principled stance Ankara has consistently condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, calling for an immediate end to the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the protection of Palestinian rights. Turkish officials have characterized the consolidation of the “yellow line” as yet another step toward the permanent fragmentation of Palestinian territory, warning that such actions undermine the prospects for a viable two-state solution. Türkiye continues to advocate for international accountability and has called on the global community to take concrete action to halt the ongoing violations of international law.
