Israeli forces kill Palestinian, injure another in southern Gaza amid continued ceasefire violations

2026-02-03 - 11:35

A Palestinian man was killed and another wounded by Israeli fire on Tuesday in separate incidents in the southern Gaza Strip, medical sources reported. The fatality occurred when Israeli forces shot a young man in the head south of the al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis. In a separate incident east of Khan Younis, another young man sustained moderate injuries from Israeli gunfire. Persistent Ceasefire Violations The shootings are the latest in a series of hundreds of reported Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement that began on October 10. Despite the U.S. announcement in January that the second phase of the truce had started—which includes further Israeli withdrawals and the launch of Gaza reconstruction—attacks on Palestinian civilians have continued. The United Nations estimates the cost of rebuilding Gaza at approximately $70 billion. Background of the Conflict The ceasefire ended a nearly two-year Israeli military offensive that started on October 8, 2023. The war killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, wounded over 171,000, and destroyed about 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure.
