Israeli injuries from Iran war reach 5,492, with 116 still hospitalized

Israel said Friday that 5,492 injured individuals have been evacuated to hospitals since the start of the war with Iran on Feb. 28, according to an official update. As of 7 am (0400GMT) on Friday, 116 people remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition and 16 in severe condition, Israel's Health Ministry said on X. The ministry said 24 patients are in moderate condition, 74 have minor injuries, and one is undergoing medical assessment. Media restrictions Israel maintains strict limits on information about the impact of Iranian retaliatory attacks and strikes by Hezbollah, with the military imposing tight media controls and warnings against publishing footage of damage or revealing targeted locations. The restrictions have made independent verification of casualty figures difficult. Conflict context The US and Israel have carried out an air offensive on Iran since Feb. 28, killing over 1,340 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and more than 150 schoolgirls. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation. Regional escalation The conflict has expanded to Lebanon, where Israeli ground operations have displaced over one million people, with Lebanese authorities reporting at least 1,094 killed and 3,119 wounded since March 2. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, with around 1,900 vessels stranded and oil prices above $116 per barrel.
