Israeli minister threatens to turn Beirut into Gaza's Khan Younis

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a chilling threat Thursday during a tour of communities along Israel's border with Lebanon, vowing to bombard Beirut's southern suburbs until they mirror the devastation of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The far-right minister's remarks, reported by Israeli news portal Walla, signal a potential dramatic escalation as cross-border hostilities intensify following Hezbollah's retaliatory attacks. Khan Younis as a Model of Destruction Khan Younis was almost completely obliterated during Israel's two-year offensive that has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, injured over 172,000, and destroyed approximately 90% of civilian infrastructure. The UN estimates reconstruction costs at roughly $70 billion. By invoking this level of destruction, Smotrich appeared to threaten similarly catastrophic damage to Lebanese civilian areas. Context of Escalating Violence Smotrich's threat follows intensified Israeli strikes across Lebanon that have killed at least 102 people and wounded nearly 650 since Monday, according to Lebanese health authorities. The attacks came after Hezbollah rocket fire targeting northern Israel, part of the group's retaliation for Israel's expanded shelling of southern Lebanon. The escalation on Israel's northern border runs parallel to the larger US-Israeli campaign against Hezbollah's ally Iran, which has now killed at least 926 people including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials since Saturday.
