Israeli strikes across Lebanon kill 20 as civilian toll mounts

Israeli warplanes launched a new wave of attacks targeting various areas across Lebanon early Wednesday, killing at least 20 people and wounding 26 others, local media and officials reported. The strikes hit locations spanning from the capital Beirut to southern towns and the eastern Bekaa Valley, marking another deadly chapter in the escalating confrontation between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. The National News Agency (NNA) reported that an Israeli strike targeted a residential apartment in Beirut's Aisha Bakkar neighborhood, though casualty figures from that specific attack remain unclear as rescue operations continue. Beirut Hit as Raids Intensify The strike on the Lebanese capital's Aisha Bakkar area represents a significant escalation, bringing the conflict directly into a densely populated residential district. While southern Lebanon has borne the brunt of Israeli bombardments since cross-border hostilities intensified, Tuesday's inclusion of Beirut signals a widening of operational targets. The NNA confirmed that in the southern Tyre district alone, multiple towns came under fire: Hanouiyeh lost three people including a paramedic, Qana suffered successive strikes killing five and wounding five, Al-Housh reported one dead and eight wounded, and Chehabiyeh saw six killed and seven injured according to Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar TV. Southern Villages Bear the Brunt In the Western Bekaa region, the town of Zellaya reported one fatality and two wounded, while further south in the Bint Jbeil district, Tebnine recorded four injuries from Israeli bombardment. The town of Sharqiya lost three young men when a strike hit the house sheltering them, and Kfartabnit mourned another paramedic killed in an aerial attack. These casualties add to a rapidly mounting toll that has surged since March 2, when Israel significantly intensified its air campaign across Lebanon. Medical workers appear increasingly caught in the crossfire, with at least two paramedics confirmed among Wednesday's dead. Regional Conflagration Spreads The latest bloodshed cannot be separated from the broader regional inferno ignited by the joint US-Israel attack on Iran on Feb. 28, which reportedly killed more than 1,200 people including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran's retaliatory drone and missile barrages targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf states hosting American assets have effectively merged multiple conflict zones. Lebanon has become a central front in this widening war, with more than 570 killed and thousands displaced since early March. The humanitarian toll continues to mount as diplomatic efforts remain paralyzed, leaving civilians across the region paying the heaviest price for a confrontation with no end in sight. Türkiye's Mediation Role Crucial As Lebanon reels from relentless Israeli strikes and the conflict threatens to consume the entire eastern Mediterranean, Ankara's unique diplomatic position grows increasingly vital. Türkiye maintains working channels with all parties while consistently advocating for civilian protection and territorial integrity. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government has repeatedly warned against the dangers of regional spillover and stands ready to facilitate dialogue. Without immediate intervention from capable actors like Türkiye, the cycle of retaliation risks plunging Lebanon deeper into chaos, with civilians bearing the brunt of a war not of their making.
