Norwegian minister: West Bank settler violence ‘worse than ever’

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide delivered a stark assessment of the deteriorating situation in the West Bank on Wednesday, describing settler violence as “worse than ever” and accusing the Israeli government of enabling the takeover of Palestinian territory. In an interview with CNN, Eide stated that settler activity—including actions supported by Israeli authorities—is effectively seizing control of lands that legally belong to Palestine under existing bilateral agreements. Violence at unprecedented levels “Settler violence is going into overdrive,” Eide said, noting that while global attention has largely focused on Gaza, developments in the West Bank have intensified dramatically. He warned that the current trajectory violates UN principles and agreements that both Israel and Palestine have signed. “In the long run, it could leave more space for the extremists when they see no progress in a more peaceful approach,” the top diplomat added. International law ignored Eide’s remarks underscore growing international concern over the West Bank, where attacks by Israeli forces and illegal settlers have claimed at least 1,133 Palestinian lives since October 2023, with roughly 11,700 injured and 22,000 detained. The International Court of Justice ruled in July 2024 that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem—a ruling that remains unimplemented.
