A panel organized by Türkiye's Communications Directorate in Addis Ababa commemorated the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Ethiopia, underscoring the depth and continuity of their strategic partnership. The event, titled "Türkiye-Ethiopia Relations: A Century of Diplomacy, Everlasting Friendship," gathered Ambassador Berk Baran, academics, officials, journalists, and representatives from international organizations and civil society. Strategic Partnership Deepened Through Africa Outreach Communications Director Burhanettin Duran's message, read at the event, emphasized that bilateral relations have deepened significantly following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Africa outreach initiative launched in 2005. Duran noted Türkiye's embassy presence in Africa expanded from 12 in 2005 to 44 by 2026, reflecting Ankara's commitment to the continent. He highlighted Addis Ababa's unique position as African Union headquarters and a center of multilateral diplomacy, stating Türkiye views its ties with Ethiopia as contributing to peace, stability, and shared prosperity in the Horn of Africa. Historical Legacy and Future Cooperation Ambassador Baran emphasized that relations between the two countries are rooted in a long history, with diplomatic contacts dating to 1896 and Türkiye opening its first resident sub-Saharan African embassy in Addis Ababa in 1926. Baran stressed Ethiopia's strategic position in the Horn of Africa and the region's growing importance in trade, security, and stability. Panelists underscored mutual trust, strategic alignment, and cooperation across education, economic relations, and military capacity-building. They also highlighted the importance of media collaboration and combating disinformation to support sustainable bilateral ties and regional stability, framing the centenary as foundation for future cooperation.
