Türkiye opposes military action against Iran, urges diplomacy and regional dialogue, Fidan says

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s firm opposition to any military intervention against Iran, emphasizing support for a peaceful resolution led by the Iranian people without external interference. Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul on Friday, Fidan expressed concern over escalating U.S.–Iran tensions and called for diplomacy over confrontation. Diplomatic Outreach and Regional Stability Fidan highlighted that Türkiye advocates for “regional ownership” in resolving conflicts and stressed that Iran’s stability is crucial for the entire region. He noted Türkiye’s consistent communication to all counterparts, including the U.S., opposing military options against Iran. Fidan warned that Israel’s efforts to encourage a U.S. strike could severely destabilize the region and urged Washington to act prudently. Focus on Gaza and Regional Integration The ministers also discussed developments in Gaza, with Fidan reaffirming Türkiye’s active role in ceasefire efforts and reconstruction based on Gazan-led governance. On Syria, Fidan welcomed reports of an integration agreement involving Kurdish-led forces and reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity. He also emphasized shared Turkish–Iranian interests in a stable Iraq and the importance of continued bilateral dialogue. Call for a New Regional Framework Fidan criticized expansionist policies in the Middle East, specifically referencing Israeli actions, and called for a regional system based on mutual respect for borders and sovereignty. He urged Israel to abandon expansionism, recognize the State of Palestine, and engage in dialogue. Fidan concluded by expressing confidence that through sustained diplomacy, a peaceful path forward could be found, stressing that “neither deadlock nor war is a solution.”
