Türkiye reaffirms support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty amid ongoing conflict

Türkiye’s ambassador to the United States, Sedat Onal, reaffirmed Ankara’s firm support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity on Tuesday, emphasizing that stability in Sudan is critical for the wider region. Speaking at a Sudan Humanitarian Fund event hosted by the US Peace Institute in Washington, Onal stated that “the most effective way for ending the conflict is dialogue and diplomacy” and expressed Türkiye’s backing for regional and international peace efforts. Humanitarian Engagement and Aid Delivery Onal noted that Türkiye was among the first countries to provide humanitarian assistance after the conflict erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He highlighted that 30,000 tents were delivered to Sudan in December via the International Organization for Migration following the “tragic” developments in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, which fell to the RSF in October. The Turkish Red Crescent and Turkish NGOs continue to supply food, shelter, and hygiene items across Sudan, with further in-kind contributions planned in the coming weeks. International Donor Context The Washington meeting, attended by senior US, UN, and diplomatic officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, the UK, France, and others, comes as the US seeks to mobilize up to $1.5 billion in new pledges for Sudan. The gathering aligns with renewed diplomatic efforts to secure a humanitarian truce ahead of Ramadan, which begins later this month.
