Türkiye reports growth in cattle, sheep, and honey production for 2025

Türkiye's livestock sector recorded broad-based growth in 2025, according to official data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). The figures indicate a healthy expansion in the populations of major animal categories alongside increased output for key products like honey and silk. Cattle and Buffalo Herds Expand The total number of bovine animals, which includes cattle and buffaloes, reached 17.7 million heads in 2025, marking a 4.3% increase from the previous year. The cattle population alone grew by 4.3% to 17.5 million, while the number of buffaloes saw a more modest rise of 1.7%, reaching 164,785 heads. Significant Rise in Sheep and Goat Numbers Growth was even more pronounced in the ovine animal category. The total number of sheep and goats increased by 5.4% year-on-year to 57.9 million heads. The sheep population grew by 5.9% to 46.7 million, and the number of goats rose by 3.4% to 11.2 million. Honey and Silk Cocoon Output Increases Beyond livestock numbers, TurkStat reported positive trends in ancillary agricultural production. Honey output in Türkiye increased by 1.8% in 2025, reaching 97,253 tons. Meanwhile, silk cocoon production witnessed a dramatic surge, jumping by 38.4% to a total of 118 tons for the year.
