Türkiye's industrial production index decreased 1.8% on an annual basis in January, according to data released Tuesday by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The decline reflects continued challenges in the industrial sector amid global economic headwinds and regional instability. Sectoral performance In the subsectors of the industry, the mining and quarrying index fell 2.8% year-on-year, while the manufacturing index decreased 2.5% compared to January 2025. The electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply and distribution index also recorded a significant decline of 5.6% in January compared to the same month of the previous year, indicating reduced industrial energy consumption. Monthly decline On a monthly basis, the seasonally and calendar-adjusted industrial production index dropped by 2.8% in January compared to December 2025. The monthly contraction suggests softening industrial activity at the start of the year, potentially reflecting reduced demand, supply chain disruptions or energy constraints. Economic context The industrial production figures come as Türkiye navigates complex economic conditions both domestically and globally. While President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has emphasized the resilience of the financial system with central bank reserves around $200 billion, the industrial sector faces headwinds from global trade dynamics and regional uncertainties, including the ongoing Middle East conflict affecting key trading partners.
