US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering the withdrawal of American troops stationed in Germany, a possibility that has been under discussion within his administration since he took office last year, according to a report Friday. The Telegraph cited sources close to the administration who expressed deep frustration with European allies, with one source stating that “any country that’s not paying 5 percent shouldn’t be allowed to vote on future expenditures at NATO.” Pressure mounts on NATO allies over defense spending All NATO members currently allocate at least 2 percent of their GDP to defense, a target established in 2014. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has indicated that leaders will need to outline plans to reach the next goal of 5 percent at a summit scheduled to take place in Ankara later this year. One source told the Telegraph: “You shouldn’t be able to vote to spend future money if you’re not paying,” reflecting growing impatience within the Trump administration over burden-sharing within the alliance. Potential move could strain transatlantic ties The Telegraph reported in March of last year that Trump was considering withdrawing approximately 35,000 active-duty personnel from Germany, a move that would significantly alter the US military footprint in Europe and potentially strain transatlantic relations. Türkiye, as a key NATO ally hosting critical alliance infrastructure and maintaining one of the largest militaries within the organization, has consistently emphasized the importance of equitable burden-sharing and strategic solidarity. Ankara will host the upcoming NATO summit where defense spending targets are expected to be a central topic of discussion.
