Trump weighs second carrier strike group for Middle East amid Iran talks

2026-02-11 - 08:15

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he is considering sending a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, a move that would intensify military pressure on Iran as diplomatic negotiations resume. “We have an armada that is heading there and another one might be going,” Trump told Axios, adding that he is “thinking” about the additional deployment. Military Pressure as Diplomatic Leverage A U.S. official later corroborated that internal discussions regarding a second strike group are ongoing. It would join the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is already stationed in the region. Trump framed the situation starkly for Iran: “Either we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time,” he said, referencing U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. Talks Expected to Resume The president indicated that a second round of negotiations with Iranian officials is anticipated next week, suggesting Tehran is now more seriously engaged. “Last time they didn’t believe I would do it,” Trump stated, claiming his willingness to use force has shifted the diplomatic landscape. He expressed optimism about reaching an agreement that addresses Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities, calling a potential deal a “no-brainer.” Netanyahu’s Visit and Regional Alignment Trump also addressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to the White House on Wednesday, dismissing reports of friction. “He also wants a deal. He wants a good deal,” Trump said. Tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen in recent months, fueled by a U.S. military buildup in the Persian Gulf and repeated threats of military action from the Trump administration.
