Turkish firm SYS Group to bring 30mm revolving cannon to US market

Turkish defense contractor SYS Group is preparing to enter the U.S. medium-caliber weapons market with a 30x113mm revolving cannon, developed in collaboration with American firm General Dynamics. The announcement was made by CEO Urku Aral on the sidelines of the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, where the group showcased its integrated defense solutions spanning light weapons, naval platforms, and land systems. A Unique Alternative for US Integration Aral emphasized that the European-style revolving cannon presents a distinct option for land vehicle turrets, differentiating it from the chain guns and Gatling systems currently standard in the United States. "This is a unique alternative for land vehicle integration," he stated. The weapon is compatible with M789 ammunition—the standard round for Apache helicopters—offering logistical efficiencies for prospective operators. Expanding US Production Footprint The CEO projected SYS Group's U.S. production to reach 100,000 units in 2026, up from 65,000 last year, driven by the addition of a third shift at its Florida manufacturing facility by March and increased automation to offset costs. The expansion reflects the firm's broader growth trajectory following sustained success in the Middle East. Saudi Modernization in Focus Aral confirmed the company is leveraging its General Dynamics partnership to pitch the 30mm cannon for Saudi Arabia's defense vehicle modernization programs. He noted the 30x113mm represents the highest caliber compatible with integrated anti-tank missiles and 2.75-inch rockets, as larger rounds compromise the shelf life of accompanying munitions. "Today, our position on the turrets of 6x6 or 8x8 vehicles is very critical," Aral added, noting the system is already installed on turrets developed in this configuration in Türkiye.
