Turkish patrol boats bound for Southeast Asia in landmark export deal

Turkish defense industry firms have secured a landmark export agreement to deliver multi-purpose patrol boats to Southeast Asia, marking the first time a Turkish naval platform of this class will enter the region's market. Through a partnership between international defense contractor Bay Galata and design-engineering specialist Kraken Marine Industries, two armored and weaponized multi-purpose vessels will be exported to an undisclosed Southeast Asian country, according to information obtained last week. Regional Breakthrough The deal represents a significant milestone for Türkiye's shipbuilding sector, which has steadily increased its global footprint with products spanning multiple vessel classes. In a market traditionally dominated by European and US manufacturers, Turkish boats aim to compete through their "high performance/cost" ratio—a factor expected to serve as a reference for other regional nations. The vessels combine technical capabilities, competitive pricing, and proven references with comprehensive support packages including pre- and post-sales services, training programs, and local production incentives. Operational Capabilities The armored, weaponized patrol boats address growing maritime security needs in Southeast Asian waters, offering rapid response to piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing threats. Their high maneuverability and speed enable quick reaction in narrow channels and river mouths, while armored protection shields personnel during operations. Integrated weapon systems transform the vessels from observation platforms into active defense/attack assets. Design capabilities balance open-sea duties with shallow-water performance, reflecting Türkiye's advanced shipbuilding expertise in technical, electronic, navigation, and weapons systems.
