Ukraine-Russia peace talks postponed as US shifts focus to Iran

2026-03-10 - 07:23

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Monday that a fresh round of trilateral talks involving Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington has been pushed back. According to Zelenskyy, the delay was requested by the American side, which is currently dedicating its diplomatic efforts to the crisis unfolding in Iran. Speaking on the social media platform X, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s position, stating, “At the moment, the partners’ priority and all attention are focused on the situation around Iran, and because of this, the meeting that had been planned for this week is being postponed at the proposal of the American side.” He assured that Kyiv remains open to engaging in negotiations “at any moment” to find a realistic path toward ending the war. Zelenskyy confirms Kyiv's readiness Following a meeting with his negotiation team, the Ukrainian president revealed that communication with American officials remains intensive, occurring “virtually 24/7.” He has instructed his delegation to reaffirm Ukraine’s dedication to strategic cooperation, particularly concerning security guarantees and defense against drone attacks. The core objective, he noted, is to reiterate Kyiv’s commitment to substantive work aimed at concluding Russia’s military campaign. Accusation against Russia In his statement, Zelenskyy also levied accusations against Moscow, claiming it seeks to exploit the heightened tensions in the Middle East. He argued that Russia intends to use the instability in the Gulf region to its advantage on the battlefield in Eastern Europe, a move he insisted must be countered. The three parties have previously convened for three rounds of discussions. The initial two meetings were hosted in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, on Jan. 23-24 and Feb. 4-5, while the third round was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on Feb. 17-18. The postponement marks a pause in the US-brokered process as global diplomatic attention turns toward Tehran.
